The Phase 2 East Section of Beijing Metro Line 14 has opened to passengers.

Beijing MTR Corporation Limited has formally opened the new 14.8-kilometre section of Line 14 on December 28, connecting Jintailu and Shangezhuang.

The new eastern section includes 12 new stations, of which 10 are currently in operation. Full service is scheduled to begin after 2017.

Beijing MTR currently operates three metro lines in the Chinese capital. In a statement, Lincoln Leong, acting chief executive officer of MTR Corporation, said Beijing MTR had recently signed a letter of intent for Line 16.

Beijing MTR, which has a 30-year operating contract for Line 14, has been responsible for the electrical and mechanical systems and rolling stock as part of theRMB¥50 billion (€6.7 billion) public-private partnership (PPP) project.

Richard Wong, general manager of Beijing MTR, said: “The 12.4-kilometre Phase 1 of Line 14 opened in May 2013 and patronage has been growing steadily.”

He added: “The Phase 2 East Section will help ease traffic congestion in the eastern part of the city.”

Four new lines opened across the Beijing Metro network in December.
