Arriva has launched the second phase of a contract with Stockholm’s transport authority to take control of the city’s light rail lines.

The European transport group today (January 7) took over the Swedish capital’s 65 km Roslagsbanan tram system, having replaced Veolia last year as the operator of the Nockebybanan and Lidingöbanan lines.

The 12-year E20 contract was awarded to Arriva by regional transport authority Storstockholms Lokaltrafik.

Phase two of the deal sees a further 920 employees transferring to Arriva.

David Martin, chief executive of Arriva, said: “Our aim for this phase of the E20 contract is the same as the first, to increase train and bus use in Stockholm by improving each element of our customers’ journeys and travel experience.

“We have made a number of service, network and infrastructure commitments in our bid.

“We said we would deliver high quality transport services which meet or exceed passenger expectations and the requirements of client body, SL, and we are delivering on these commitments.”
