Ansaldo STS Australia has been awarded a new railway signalling and communications contract worth €33m by Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

This is the second major award made under the Framework Agreement established by Ansaldo STS and Rio Tinto Iron Ore on 25 November 2010.

It involves the delivery of railway signalling and communications for the Hope Downs 4 iron ore project currently underway in the south eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Under the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Ansaldo STS Framework Agreement (RAFA), Ansaldo STS is to deliver a program of works over five years, to support Rio Tinto’s major expansion and operational efficiency projects in the Pilbara.

The anticipated value of the works over the period is €340m and will include engineering, systems integration and technology required to support Rio Tinto’s expansion and efficiency projects.

The planned projects, to be performed on demand, include the introduction of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic Braking (ECP) and enhanced Signalling, Train Control and Communication Systems.

Ansaldo STS has been designing and delivering railway signalling and transportation solutions for Rio Tinto’s operations in Western Australia since 1992.
