Amtrak is to begin installing inward-facing cameras in all its driver cabs in reaction to the derailment in Philadelphia last month.
Video cameras will be fitted in 70 ACS-64 locomotives – the same model as that involved in Philadelphia – by the end of the year.
The cameras will allow the operator monitor driver performance on the Northeast corridor and provide investigators with information that they would usually only get from driver interviews.
Following the ACS-64 fleet, Amtrak plans to roll out the technology to its Acela Express power cars and diesel locomotives.
US accident investigator NTSB has repeatedly called for inward-facing cameras to be installed on rail vehicles – a call that resurfaced in 2013 following the Metro-North accident in New York.
