West Bromwich based waste management and industrial cleaning specialist Haz Environmental and train cleaning and maintenance company Alstom Transport have been short-listed in the environmental category of the prestigious National Rail Awards.
The entry was based on a project that took 293 tonnes of waste per year produced at Alstom’s Wolverhampton facility and, through a mixture of recycling and waste-to-energy, cut the amount of Alstom’s waste going to landfill to zero, while reducing the company’s waste disposal costs by 22%.
Once the recyclables are removed from the waste stream, 270 tonnes per annum is sent to the Wolverhampton waste-to-energy plant where it produces 400kW hours of electricity per tonne without the use of fossil fuels.
Also, by using local facilities and reducing collection frequencies, the two companies reduced the overall amount of CO2 produced in managing the site’s waste.
Alstom Transport which recently obtained ISO 14001, acknowledge that, as well as reducing CO2 emissions to tackle global warming, shortage of landfill sites has become a real issue in the UK, and with the aid of Haz Environmental, it says it has been able to tackle both these issues.
