Explosion hits Minsk Metro station

A large explosion has hit a metro station in the centre of Minsk today, the capital of Belarus.

Belarusian state news agency Belta reports that ‘several people’ have been killed in the metro blast.

Belta said the blast occurred this afternoon at the Oktyabrskaya metro station about 100m from the Presidential Administration building.

There was no immediate indication of whether the blast was an accident or a terrorist attack.

“There are casualties,” said Belta. First-aid workers were helping injured people at the scene, it said.

The Emergencies Ministry said it was investigating.
