Birse Metro awarded final London Overground contract

Listen to this article

Birse Metro has been awarded the contract to complete the final part of the London Overground network.

Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction link will ‘orbit the capital from late next year’, allowing many passengers to avoid central London.

Funding for the £75m project is coming from the Department of Transport (£40m), Transport for London (£15m) and an increment to Network Rail’s Regulatory Asset Base (£20m).

The majority of the route will make use of existing lines, but a new stretch of track will have to be constructed to link London Overground services at Surrey Quays with the existing line at Old Kent Road.

A new bay platform will also be created at Clapham Junction from the existing platform 2.

In 2008 TfL carried out research that discovered that just under half of all Londoners’ journeys started and finished in outer London, but only approximately a quarter of these journeys were made by public transport due to the lack of public transport options for making orbital journeys.
