Spain is set to receive €2.24 million to help conduct studies into implementing a new high speed rail line between Bobadilla and Granada.

The EU contribution will be made under the 2010 Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency’s ‘Annual Call’.

They will also contribute to the implementation of Priority Project 19, the ‘High speed interoperability on the Iberian Peninsula’.

The studies receiving funding consist of geographical studies around Loja station and Sierra Gorda, and the Loja bypass to Valle del Genil.

The funding will also cover track bed design studies for 21.4km of  the high speed railway line, for the following four sub-sections:

  • Quejigares-Variante de Loja
  • Loja bypass-Rio Frio
  • Loja bypass-A-92
  • Loja bypass-Valle del Genil

These studies are an important part of the realisation of Spain’s high speed rail network.

Specifically, they will help the direct high speed link between Granada, Malaga, Cordoba, Seville, Madrid and other main Spanish cities, leading to a significant reduction in journey times.

As well as connecting Granada to cities outside Andalusia, the new line will also make a significant contribution to transport links within the region.
