Railway Benefit Fund’s Royal Charter Steams Ahead as Flagship Fundraiser

Listen to this article

On Friday 3rd June The Railway Benefit Fund’s most exciting fundraiser to date, The Royal Charter, took 250 passengers from Crewe to Windsor to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 70000 Britannia hauled the Saphos carriages on the historic journey, and it was a day of celebrations for all.

Treated to a luxury day of fine dining, were some of the RBF’s Heart of Gold winners including the Arriva Rail London, Hatch End Station Team and staff from Avanti West Coast and Southeastern. These much-loved awards celebrate the hard work of those in the rail industry, recognising those who have gone above and beyond to help their communities, passengers and colleagues. There were some special RBF ambassadors also treated to a day out as a thank you for their hard work volunteering, spreading awareness of the work of the charity and signposting their colleagues in need.

On board were Paul, and his girlfriend Isla. Isla’s grandfather was involved in the building of 70000 Britannia, so what better location for a surprise proposal on the footplate of this historic locomotive. She said yes!

As the charities flagship fundraising event, the day was well attended by plenty of movers and shakers within the rail industry, including Abellio Ancillary Services, Caledonian Sleeper, Furrer + Frey, Freightliner, Avanti West Coast, Arriva TrainCare, Health Shield and of course RBF’s president, Pete Waterman OBE.

CEO, Claire Houghton said, ‘We were absolutely delighted to have raised over £60,000 and our thanks go to Locomotive Services Limited and Saphos Trains for making this wonderful event happen, as well as the Branch Line Society for hosting the ticketing.’

You can own a permanent reminder of the day by bidding for The Royal Charter headboard carried by Britannia in our Royal Railway Auction – be quick it finishes at 7pm on Friday night! https://go.eventgroovefundraising.com/royalauction

All proceeds from The Royal Charter will go towards supporting current, former and retired railway workers and their families who have fallen on hard times.
