Rail Minister Jo Johnson visited South Yorkshire for the long-awaited launch of a new tram-train service between Sheffield and Rotherham.

Around 45 per cent of the tram will be covered in large windows. Six passenger information screens will feature inside as will USB charging points - a first in France. 

The contract with the consortium is expected to be signed before the end of 2018.

The first order from the agreement is valued at €40 million and covers the supply of 11 trams for the T4 line. Other orders may also be placed in the future.

In July it was transported to the Port of Santander, Spain, where it was loaded onto a special roll-on-roll-off ship bound for the Port of Newcastle.

The tram, which was manufactured in La Rochelle, France, arrived at the port of Keelung on 2 September and was then delivered to Kaohsiung.

They will enter commercial use in 2020, when they will replace the complete fleet of 1978-built Be4/12 railcars.
