The update comes after HS2 updated the shortlist of firms to build at least 54 conventional compatible trains for Britain’s new high-speed line.

Alstom already has experience of the 1520mm track gauge, having built locomotives in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.

The investment is almost half of the around €955 million needed to acquire the InterCity Next Generation trains.

Entrants are asked to design fully accessible footbridges that can be used across Britain’s rail network and that further improve the legacy of rail pioneers.
