The Department for Transport has appointed Atkins as their technical adviser for the West Coast Main Line franchise replacement.
The existing franchise, operated by Virgin Trains, expires next March and the new franchise is expected to run for up to 15 years.
Atkins’ project director Michael Hayes said:
“Our technical understanding, past experiences and desire to continue improving our rail industry will ensure the Department is fully aware of all the elements and growth opportunities so the right operator is chosen.”
The successful bidder is expected to be announced later this year.
Managers at Birmingham Airport have indicated that they are keen to work with whoever operates the franchise in order to create a seamless transition between rail and air.
They ideally want journey times reduced between Birmingham International and London Euston to under an hour as they believe that this would increase the number of passengers flying from and into Birmingham.
