The Thameslink Programme has taken another significant step forward with the reopening of Blackfriars Station after a highly complicated package of work was completed. This saw the station temporarily closed to passengers over an eight-week period from 20th November.
The revised track layout will allow more services to run to and through central London. Blackfriars’s new roof is also nearing completion, together with extended platforms spanning the Thames. The latter enhancement will enable the first 12-carriage train to call there from December.
Network Rail and construction partner Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering completed the work on time despite challenging winter weather conditions. More than 1,200 people invested over 400,000 man hours in activities such as demolition, bridge deck weather proofing, roof framework erection, track laying plus the installation of new signalling, telecoms and passenger information systems.
Blackfriars’ underground station will remain closed until later this year.
