French consortium lands Qatar light rail contract

Alstom and VINCI Construction Grands Projets have been awarded the contract for the final package of works for a four-line light rail system in Lusail, Qatar.

Alstom’s €750 million share of the contract includes the supply 35 trains equipped with catenary-free technology, track-laying, energy supply and telecommunications as well as control systems. The order includes an option for a further 32 vehicles.

The 33-kilometre system includes seven kilometres of tunnels and 37 stations. QDVC – a 51 per cent Qatari Diar, 49 per cent VINCI Construction Grands Projets joint venture – has already completed the first phase of civils and is currently building Pearl station which will connect the Lusail light rail with the Doha metro system.

This latest €2 billion design-build contract covers the construction of 25 stations and a depot, architectural and electro-mechanical works packages and integrated project management.

The contract was signed in Paris between Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, French President François Hollande and Patrick Kron, Alstom chairman and chief executive.
