Contractors shortlisted for Sydney light rail preliminary works

Three companies have been shortlisted for one of two major contracts being let in the construction of a new light rail system in the heart of Sydney.

Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction, Leighton Contractors and a joint venture between Downer EDI Works and Parsons Brinckerhoff Australia have all reached the next stage of a competition to deliver the early works contract on behalf of the New South Wales Government.

The early works contract and the main PPP contract for the design, construction and operation of the line are worth a combined $1.6 billion.

Sydney launched both tenders for the 12-kilometre light rail network in October 2013.

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said: “Eight top tier construction firms registered to tender for the early works contract – it is clear to the private sector that we are getting on with the job of building this important transport project for NSW.”

If granted planning approval, construction of the new light rail system could begin by the end of 2014 and be completed within five to six years, the NSW Government has said.
