SuperVia backs Rio sleeper factory

Listen to this article

Brazilian rail operator SuperVia has signed an agreement with sleeper manufacturer Salgueiro to build a new factory in Rio de Janeiro’s western district.

The 140,000 square metre site will be capable of producing 1,600 concrete sleepers a day when it opens in August this year.

SuperVia and Rio’s state government are delivering a $2.4 billion package of works to upgrade the region’s rail network.

In the next five years, SuperVia is hoping to replace 600,000 existing wooden sleepers with longer-lasting concrete sleepers.
