Polish train operator PKP Intercity has announced plans to procure 10 new diesel locomotives.
The fleet, which will allow PKP to run passenger services on non-electrified lines in the north of the country, is part of a total rolling stock investment scheme worth 980 million euros.
The Polish SU45 locomotive has reached the end of its operational life and PKP has said modernising the engines ‘cannot be justified economically’.
PKP is applying for EU funding to support the purchase.
In November 2012, PKP issued an invitation to tender for the modernisation of 150 rail cars operating on the Przemysl-Szczecin line – the largest order of its kind in the company’s history.
The deadline for bids is March 12, 2013.
