A busy underground commuter line has reopened between Brooklyn and Manhattan for the first time since Super Storm Sandy ravaged the U.S. East Coast.
Engineers have been working for more than a month to return services to the Montague Tube between Brooklyn Heights and Lower Manhattan.
More than 27 million gallons of salt water and tons of debris had to be removed from the tunnels during the cleanup.
The under-river link was finally reopened on December 21.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) said: “The electrical and signal system had to be rebuilt virtually from scratch, including wiring, relays, track circuits, lighting stop motors and other equipment associated with the safe movement of subway trains.”
