Engineering consultancy Systra has been appointed by the Danish city of Odense as the technical consultant to a proposed 14 km light rail transit (LRT) system.

The planned LRT system will improve connections between the city centre and the Odense Banegård railway station.

It will also link to the developing areas in the south including the new University Hospital (ODH) in Svendborg, and the University of Southern Denmark (Syddansk Universitet).

A second phase will run from Vollsmose via Vesterbro and on to the Odense Zoo.

Together with Danish partners COWI, Systra will lead the design of the tramway’s system specifications. The work includes technical input to the feasibility study and environmental impact assessment, technical studies related to rolling stock, track and railway systems, preparation of tender documentation and advice on its future development.

Systra’s project director Andrew Boagey said: “Systra has several years experience of working in Denmark, our experts have worked on the Aarhus LRT and also Copenhagen’s ‘Cityringen’ Metro.

“We are delighted to be involved in the development of Odense’s new LRT network. The challenge will be designing a system which meets the City’s environmental standards and one which is complimentary to its attractive urban form”.
