Work has begun to improve Platform 1 at Derby station, benefitting passengers travelling between Penzance and Edinburgh this Spring.

Yesterday (6 February) work got underway to resurface Platform 1, making it more resilient and better at draining water during heavy downpours. The upgrade will provide passengers with an improved space to wait for their train.

The new platform is set to be completed by the end of next month.

Danni Parker-Rankine, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail, said: “This improvement will ultimately deliver a better platform for passengers who use Platform 1 at Derby station and secure it for many years to come.

“We’ve planned the work carefully, opting to work throughout the night so that passengers can continue to travel by train as normal through the day.”

Engineers will work through the night to keep the platform open for passengers during the day. It’s the regular stop for CrossCountry’s Penzance to Edinburgh service, which travels through places like Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle, unlocking unlimited onward connections.

John Robson, Regional Director East Midlands & East Anglia, CrossCountry, said: “We are delighted that Network Rail is investing in new surfacing which will greatly improve the station experience in wet weather conditions for customers boarding and alighting our long-distance Voyager and High-Speed Trains which use platform one at Derby. I’m really pleased that this important improvement work is taking place at night which means our customers and train crew colleagues will not be inconvenienced.”

Will Rogers, Managing Director at EMR, said: “This major work to resurface Platform 1 at Derby station will deliver a much better, robust platform for our customers for many years to come.

“We’re really pleased Network Rail are working through the night, which will mean minimum disruption for any customers travelling in the day.”
