Hamilton rail bridge works completed

Listen to this article

Vital improvement work on the railway bridge at Quarry Street, near Hamilton Central Station, has been completed by Network Rail.

The work, which included involved steelworks, masonry repairs and repainting, was carried out to extend the lifespan of the bridge and is part of a wider upgrade programme aimed at protecting and enhancing structures Scotland’s Railway.

Work began in May with a lane closure, as well as two weekends where the road was fully closed, and a series of nightshift activities to allow the railway to remain open. Early in July, the road was completely re-opened to traffic and remained open for the final months of the programme.

“Our investment in repairing and repainting the bridge at Quarry Street will protect the structure for years to come,” said Suzanne McKay, scheme project manager at Network Rail. “It has also made a big difference to the appearance of the bridge.

“The line underneath the bridge as well as the road that runs over it, are both vital transport links for people in Hamilton and across Lanarkshire.

“We are grateful to the local community, as well as rail and road users, for their support and patience during these essential works.”
