Listen to this article

The Office for National Statistics published new statistics yesterday regarding people’s commute to and from work.

In response to ONS figures about commuting patterns, a spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies said:

“The figures underline the vital role that the railways play in keeping the country moving and getting people to and from work, in particular in the capital.

“We haven’t had this many people travelling by train since the 1920s and passenger numbers have kept on growing strongly in recent months as the impact of rising petrol prices continues to be felt by motorists.”

In London around half of all workers taking public transport (20% the train, 18% the Underground and 12% the bus).
