Arriva Trains Wales strike announced by ASLEF

Listen to this article

Members of the train drivers’ union ASLEF will take strike action on 28 February, not booking on for turns from midnight to midnight that day. They will also cease to work any non-contractual overtime from the previous day. It is expected that further strike dates will be announced shortly. The action is in pursuit of an acceptable pay increase, which months of negotiation has failed to provide.

The union held two separate ballots for its 513 train driver members working for the company. The first, asking if members were prepared to take part in a strike, was supported by a 70% return. The second, asking for views on action short of a strike, drew over 80% approval.

The General Secretary has advised the Human Resources Director of the company of the union’s decision to take strike action because of the company’s failure to provide a satisfactory pay offer.

The union and the company will meet next Tuesday with a view to reviewing the position and hopefully making progress by negotiation.

These strikes mean thousands of customers will have to find alternative transport to work and school after the half-term holiday.
