Passengers at Orpington station will experience a more pleasant and drier wait for their trains after a £2.5m project to refurbish the canopies has been completed.

The canopies are supported by wrought-iron columns and needed some TLC to make them fit for the future.

New glazing has been installed over platforms 1, 2, 5 and 6 and fresh timber fascia fitted too, along with work to downpipes and drainage. Additionally, new glazing has been put over the inter-platform subway staircases providing more natural lighting.

The works were carried out without major disruption to passengers with platform closures kept to a minimum by close working between the project team and station operator Southesatern.

Network Rail Kent Route Director, Fiona Taylor, said: “The work at Orpington station has created a really good environment for passengers, with light falling on platforms, rather than rain.

“It’s great to be able to offer people better journeys and improve the look and feel of the station.”

Southeastern Area Manager, Will Buck, said: “We always want to give people the best travel experience possible and these improvements at Orpington station have made a real difference.

“During any wet weather it’s important for safety and comfort that there is shelter and dry space on the platform, this investment by Network Rail delivers that.

“I hope our passengers are pleased with the work undertaken at this important station.”
