Network Rail has started work on a £3million project to improve accessibility for passengers at Northallerton station.

A lift will be installed on both platforms to provide step-free access for passengers. They will link to the existing subway, making it easier for people using the station.

The main part of the project to install the lift shafts will start in June and the work is expected to be completed in March 2022.

The work will not impact on train services and it is taking place behind hoardings to keep disruption for people using the station to a minimum. Any work which cannot be carried out behind the hoardings will be done overnight. Both platforms will remain open throughout the project.  Network Rail has also sent letters to people who live nearby to give them more information about the work.

Network Rail, TransPennine Express (TPE) and the Department for Transport are working together on the project with funding made available from the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme.

Paul Rutter, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “We are committed to improving access for passengers and this vital work will make it much easier for people to move around Northallerton station.

“Since receiving the Access for All funding, we’ve worked with local stakeholders and accessibility groups to find the best option for passengers, whilst working to minimise disruption as much as possible throughout the project.”

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director for TransPennine Express said: “The introduction of lifts at Northallerton station is fantastic news for our customers.

“The accessibility of our services is very important to us and I’m sure this will come as very welcome news to those with additional mobility requirements and those travelling with young children and luggage.

“We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep disruption to a minimum and would like to thank customers for their patience while the work takes place.”

Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond (Yorks), welcomed the start of work on the project. He said: “I am pleased that funding has been sourced from the Government’s Access for All programme. The lifts will make a big difference to Northallerton Station.

“When completed I am sure these improvements will be very much appreciated by those who experience access issues at present.”
