National rail operator Indian Railways has unveiled plans for a ‘massive’ rolling stock manufacturing facility in the city of Latur, Marathwada region, Maharashtra.
Announcing the project, a spokesperson said that the factory will produce electric multiple units for suburban trains as well as coaches for metro systems, and will generate jobs and contribute to the region’s economic development.
The highest priority has been assigned to building the plant with approvals set to be fast tracked.

India’s Ministry of Railways said that Marathwada is one of “the most backward areas of Maharashtra” and that there have been few central government projects in the region.
It’s hoped the project will contribute to the region’s shift from a reliance on agriculture to industry.
