Birmingham railway revellers’ advice ahead of bank holiday weekend

Listen to this article

Bank holiday revellers are being urged to plan ahead if travelling by train as a host of huge events across the weekend means the railway will be extra busy.

The Birmingham Big Weekender is expected to draw big crowds to the city while Reading and Leeds Festivals, Cardiff and Manchester Prides and the Notting Hill Carnival will mean thousands of people will be on the move.

With Birmingham New Street being a key interchange station, passengers should plan their journey, check before they travel and allow extra time.

Steven Ireland, Network Rail’s director of stations for Birmingham New Street, said: “It’s great such huge events are happening again and we love the station being busy, but it’s important that passengers plan ahead and allow themselves plenty of time to get to their destination.

“Make sure you know your last trains home and check before you travel with National Rail Enquiries or your train operator so you have the latest travel information.”

Station staff will be on hand at Birmingham New Street to help passengers, with the station team briefed and prepared for the thousands of extra travellers.

At busy times queuing systems may be used to make sure people can board trains safely.

Passengers are being urged to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest travel information.
