Disruption for passengers in New Mills as Network Rail carries out emergency work to the embankment

Listen to this article

Passengers travelling between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly are being warned of disruption to train journeys as urgent work is carried out on the railway embankment.

Emergency repair work is being carried out at two locations near New Mills, Derbyshire, to stabilise the ground following a report of cracks in the land near to the track.

Network Rail initially introduced a speed restriction at the location while the work took place, however, more strict measures are now required to keep passengers safe.

To carry out the work as safely and efficiently as possible, one line of track is closed and there are some changes to services in the area.

Chris Pye, Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director, said: “I’d advise passengers to check before they travel between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly stations, as urgent repairs to the embankments in the Hague Fold area take place.

“I’m very sorry for any disruption caused to your journeys. We hope to reopen both lines safely as soon as possible.”

Network Rail are working with train operator, Northern, to keep passengers on the move as much as possible.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said: “We join Network Rail in apologising to customers for the disruption caused whilst these essential infrastructure repairs are carried out. Customers should check before they travel in case they need to allow extra time for their journey.”

Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield services are currently operating via Stockport calling at all stations between Chinley and Dore and Totley.

Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central services are operating using a single line between Marple and New Mills Central.

Marple continues to be served by up to three trains per hour – two from Rose Hill and one from Marple.
