DB ESG is pleased to be able to confirm that it has received a new order from Transport for Wales (TfW) to design and install a manual selective door operation (SDO) system for TfW’s fleet of seven train rakes consisting of Mark 4’s (Mk 4), driving van trailers (DVT) and Class 67 locomotives. This fleet is not currently fitted with SDO, but there is a need for such a system to be in operation at stations with shorter platform lengths, where the platforms are too short to accommodate the complete trainset. TfW wants to be able to control the release of the doors on a door-by-door basis, allowing their train crew to decide which doors to enable at individual stations.

DB ESG is currently working on this fleet of 7 Mk 4 rakes, following contracts received from TfW and Eversholt Rail, to complete the modifications necessary to enable Mk 4 coaching stock to be operated by Class 67 locomotives and DVT. To date 4 rakes have been modified with the project expected to be completed before Easter 2022.

SDO will now be installed onto these 7 Mk 4 rakes, with the work commencing in July 2022 and scheduled for completion in time for the December 2022 timetable change. Nick Goodhand, Managing Director, DB ESG said: “We are already undertaking modification work on these Mk 4 units for Transport for Wales. We are therefore familiar with this coaching stock and have developed great working relationships with the Transport for Wales team. We look forward to continuing our partnership.
