DB plots migration to next-generation GSM-R

Listen to this article

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded Siemens and Huawei the contract to lead the migration across to its next-generation GSM-R network in the north of the country.

The programme will see the installed Huawei GSM-R Radio Infrastructure (BSS) integrated into the existing switching center (MSC).

The new system is compliant with EIRENE GSM-R and ETCS2/ERTMS standards and will allow mobile broadband services like 4G.

In total, 12,000 kilometres of the DB network, around 40 per cent of the entire German rail network, will be upgraded to the modern system.
