Consortium named to extend Mexico City Line 12

Listen to this article

Line 12 of the Mexico City metro, which opened in 2012, is to be extended.

Currently the line runs from Tláhuac in the South East of the city to Mixcoac where it connects with Line 7. Plans are to extend it north-west to Observatorio and connect with Line 1.

The contract for the first phase of the work has been let to a consortium of Promotora y Desarrolladora de México (Prodemex); Proacon México, and Desarrollo de Terracerías.

The extension will consist of a 3.9km long tunnel and two intermediate stations at Valentín Campa and Álvaro Obregón. There will also be four exits to comply with fire regulations, on average 760 metres apart.

The extension is due to be completed by the end of 2016.

This work is unconnected with remedial work to the rest of the line. 1,271 alumino-thermic welds on the original line have to be replaced as well as 19,000 sleepers, tracks and other hardware. This process is being overseen by SYSTRA and is scheduled to be complete by November 2015.
