PKP Cargo seeks additional multi-system locos

Listen to this article

Polish freight operator PKP Cargo has issued a tender for 20 new multi-system locomotives as it looks to expand its service across Europe.

The contract includes a firm order for 15 locomotives with an option for five more. PKP Cargo had planned to order 10 multi-system units with an option for an extra five but decided to expand the procurement because of plans to electrify the railway between Wegliniec, Germany, and Gorlitz in Poland.

Following its acquisition of Advanced World Transport (AWT), PKP Cargo is expanding its cross-border operation. The new locomotives, which will be delivered between August 2016 and March 2017, will operate in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and the Netherlands.

The winning manufacturing will also be required to provide maintenance services for the new fleet.
