Deutsche Bahn (DB) is to close maintenance facilities in Eberswalde and Zwickau, citing a decline in the demand for maintenance services within the freight sector.
The German rail company has said there will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of the decision and that it hopes to offer employees similar roles within its vehicle maintenance arm or the wider DB Group.
DB said it had seen a substantial reduction in the number of freight wagons requiring maintenance. In a statement, the company said it had already taken measurers to reduce its use of temporary staff and transfer some full-time employees to other locations.
Zwickau, which employs 80 people, and Eberswalde, which currently has 490 employees, will close in December 2015 and December 2016 respectively.
