The rolling stock leasing company which supplies trains to Helsinki’s commuter system has ordered more FLIRT electric multiple units (EMUs) from Stadler.

Junakalusto Oy, which is looking to build a uniform fleet of FLIRT trains, has exercised the second option for 34 additional units of a contract placed in 2006.

The €200 million order will see the construction of Stadler’s 1000th FLIRT train, taking the total ordered worldwide to 1,018.

Deliveries will take place between 2016 and early 2017.

Thirty-two FLIRT trainsets are already in operation in Helsinki and delivery of new vehicles from the first option of nine EMUs will be completed in November.

Junakalusto Oy is partly owned by operator VR-Group and the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen.
