Swiss operator SBB has completed a CHF 160 million modernisation of 232 EuroCity carriages.

The five-year upgrade programme has seen the entire EuroCity rolling stock fleet refurbished, including installation of 3G Wi-Fi systems, new interiors and new customer information systems.

The new fleet also includes ski and bike holders.

SBB has said the upgraded fleet will save around 5.4 million Gigawatt hours (GWh) a year – the equivalent of 1,500 Swiss households.

The upgrade, which will extend the fleet’s life by another 20 years, was carried out at SBB’s Olten depot.
