Indian Railways’ revenue increases by 10.3%

The world’s fourth largest rail network, Indian Railways, has reported that their revenue earnings for the first five months of this fiscal year (April to August) has increased to Rs. 41,030 crore, registering a 10.3 % increase when compared to Rs. 37,198 crore for the same period last year.

The earnings from freight transportation have increased to Rs. 27435.82 crore from Rs. 24760.02 crore, an increase of 10.81 %.

Earnings from passenger rail travel saw a 10.39 % increase to Rs. 11692.45 crore compared to Rs. 10592.02 crore recorded during the same period last year.

The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 1152.91 crore during April-August 2011 compared to Rs. 1028.59 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 12.09%.

More than 3418.13 million passengers travelled on the network during April – August 2011, an increase of just over 5% when compared to last year.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers travelling between April and August amounted to 1707.77 million and 1710.36 million respectively. This is an increase of 4.1% and 6.1%.
