Thousands take up free Manchester Metrolink offer

Listen to this article

More than two thousand free Metrolink travel vouchers were downloaded from the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) website, as people headed out on the trams to support businesses across the region.

Transport leaders are hailing the travel offer, which gave up to five people the chance to go anywhere on the entire Metrolink network for free on Sunday, a ‘huge success’.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said:

“Metrolink plays a vital part in connecting people to the many attractions for which our region is renowned, and we are proud to be part of encouraging people back into the city and surrounding areas.

“It is great that so many people took advantage of the free travel offer and used it in the spirit it was intended: to bring people together and help local businesses get up and running again after the disturbances

“Our Metrolink Passenger Service Representatives saw a significant rise in the number of people using the trams to get out and about on the day – far more than is usual for a Sunday – and that is very encouraging ahead of the busy bank holiday weekend.

“We will continue to work with local partners following the recent events to ensure our passengers are safe and informed, and that we do our bit in supporting Greater Manchester as a whole.”

Printed copies of the travel vouchers were also available in Friday’s edition of the Manchester Evening News.

Passenger Service Representatives from Metrolink reported seeing around the same number of MEN vouchers as those downloaded from the TfGM website.
