Sydney’s delayed Waratah train ‘largely complete’

Listen to this article

RailCorp Chief Executive, Mr Rob Mason said today that the inspection and assessment of the first Waratah train is largely complete with the majority of outstanding issues now resolved.

However, RailCorp has determined that more time is needed to address a limited number of issues prior to granting Practical Completion.

Mr Mason said it is expected that these remaining issues will be satisfactorily completed over the next week.

“The focus will be on testing and fine tuning the train’s door systems in addition to other minor rectification work,” Mr Mason said.

Mr Mason said the train builder, Downer EDI Rail and the consortia, Reliance Rail, have been working cooperatively with RailCorp throughout the inspection process.

“RailCorp recognises from past experience that there are no shortcuts when introducing a new train – this is a significant and complex undertaking.”

Following Practical Completion, the Independent Transport Safety Regulator (ITSR) will finalise its consideration of Reliance Rail’s safety and supporting test documentation.

ITSR’s approval is the final step required before RailCorp can operate the new train in passenger service.
