The Office for National Statistics has released new statistics today showing the latest figures for commuting times.
In October to December 2009 three out of four workers – 75% – took half an hour or less to travel from home to work, according to new analysis from the Office for National Statistics. Only 5% took more than an hour.
However the data, which is the most recent, shows that people working in London tended to take longer to travel to work, with only 44% having a journey of 30 minutes or less.
Three times as many of London’s workers as the national average – 16% – took more than an hour.
Most people – 71% – drove to work, with 10% walking, 7% catching a bus, 5% getting a train and 3% cycling.
Again, however, the picture was very different in the capital, with only 35% of those who worked in London driving to work and around half of all workers taking public transport (20% the train, 18% the Underground and 12% the bus).
Outside London, only 9% of workers took any form of public transport to work.
Around three in five, or 59%, of all workers in the UK worked and lived in the same local authority district.
The remaining, around 41%, worked in a different local authority district from the one in which they lived.
