Union Pacific to invest $400m in New Mexico rail facility

Listen to this article

America’s largest railroad network, Union Pacific, is going to construct a new rail facility in New Mexico.

Construction will begin in June and is expected to create 3000 jobs during the building of the facility until 2015. Union Pacific said that over 600 jobs will then be based at the facility near Santa Tereasa once it reaches full capacity in 2025.

“Our strategic investment in this new facility helps improve capacity and enhance efficiency on a key part of our network, while also demonstrating our long-term commitment to deliver premium service to our customers,” said Jim Young, Union Pacific Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

The facility will feature an intermodal yard and ramp with an annual lift limit of up to 250,000 containers.

When the project is completed, the southern region of the New Mexico will have greater access to the benefits of freight transport.

This facility is part of Union Pacific’s aim to invest approximately $3.2 billion in 2011 across its 32,000 mile network.
