Horsham station will be undergoing major refurbishment work under the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) scheme.
NSIP is a Department for Transport funded programme of projects designed to enhance approximately 150 medium sized stations across the rail network in England and Wales to make a noticeable and lasting improvement to the environment at selected stations for the benefit of passengers.
Starting at the beginning of May, the refurbishment work at the station includes the re-arrangement of the internal layout to provide a greatly improved passenger experience and increased retail provision to enhance the basic station facilities.
Improvements to the station include:
- A new station entrance
- Improved ticket office window location with height adjustable windows
- Improved interior finishes and greatly improved and increased retail outlets.
- On Platform 2 the toilets will be refurbished
- Additional car parking spaces to include new disabled parking
- The installation of cycle shelters on both sides of station
Southern’s project Manager for the scheme at Horsham, Pieter Wilke said:
“Whilst the improvements will make a huge difference to our passengers at Horsham, inevitably, some disruption is likely to occur while the improvements are being made. This means that there will be some temporary measures in place to ensure that passengers are able to use the station with minimum disturbance.”
Mark Ruddy, Network Rail’s route director for Sussex, said:
“An important part of building a bigger and better railway is to provide facilities at stations which better meet the needs of today’s passengers. This upgrade at Horsham will bring long-lasting benefits for those who use the station for more than 2.3m journeys every year.”
Temporary arrangements are as follows:
- There will be a temporary Ticket Office on the north west side of Building (currently used as a car hire area)
- There will also be a temporary staircase to the over bridge and platforms, with DDA access via lifts
- Ticket Vending Machines and Customer Information Services (CIS) will be provided as part of the temporary set up
- Although retail facilities currently inside the station building will be affected, facilities on the platform will remain unaffected
