Listen to this article

Punctuality on the UK’s railways was 88.7% during period 10, according to monthly performance data released today by Network Rail.

The data for Britain’s train services covers the period from 11 December 2011 – 7 January 2012.

This compares to 81.1% for the same period last year.

The moving annual average is now at 91.6%.

The best performing train operator in period 10 was London Overground, running 97% of services on time.

c2c followed closely behind, with 95.7% of its trains running on time, and Merseyrail achieved 94.7%.

The worst performing operator was Virgin Trains, running just 80.6% of its services on time.

This has been attributed to ‘overhead line damage at Stowe Hill on Dec 13, extremely high winds across the route as well as a fatality at Leighton Buzzard on Jan 5 and a track circuit failure at Kings Langley on Dec 30’.
