A new look station for Honiton was officially unveiled yesterday to the public following a seven month refurbishment programme to create a modern station environment, fit for the needs of today’s passengers.

Passengers using Honiton station are now greeted by a more welcoming station environment following the completion of a joint improvement scheme by South West Trains working in partnership with the Department for Transport, Devon County Council and Network Rail.

The improvements made include:

  • The old station building has been completely refurbished to create a more spacious booking hall and ticket office.
  • A brand new accessible toilet has now been installed, including baby changing facilities.
  • A new ramp has been installed on platform 2 making it much easier for all passengers to use the station. This is especially beneficial for those travelling with luggage or with young children, and provides access for disabled passengers who can now access both platforms.
  • A new retail unit, for which expressions of interest have already been received.
  • A new waiting shelter on platform 2

To mark the completion of the work Andy Pitt, Managing Director for South West Trains was joined at the station by Councillor Stuart Hughes from Devon County Council.

Andy Pitt, Managing Director for South West Trains said:

“We are pleased to have delivered this significant project with our partners to provide a much improved station for Honiton’s passengers. It is great to see these new facilities.

“Passengers in Honiton rely on rail for over 328 thousand journeys every year, reflecting its importance to the community and local economy.

“I am sure local residents will take pride in the new look of their train station for years to come.

“Stations remain the gateway to the railway and despite the tough economic times, we remain committed to invest over £50m in our stations over the duration of this franchise, as these are the gateway to the railway.

“Honiton underpins our commitment to continue delivering station enhancements for all our passengers.”

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said:

“This is a major investment in the station at Honiton and I’m sure it will be much appreciated by all passengers travelling to and from the town.

“The improved accessibility will make it much easier for families with young children and disabled passengers to use this line, which not only serves local communities but is also an important link to London.

“The hourly service has seen visitor numbers increase and the new facilities will hopefully encourage more people to travel by train.”
