Passengers can now get free and unlimited WiFi at Waterloo train station.

Network Rail has rolled-out the new service at the UK’s biggest station, meaning people can now take advantage of WiFi that’s fast enough to support video calls and streaming.

Coverage is provided in the concourses, platforms, forecourts, taxi ranks and mezzanines, and once logged-in passengers will automatically be connected when they arrive at any of Network Rail’s 19 managed stations across the UK.

To celebrate and show the strength of the WiFi service, Network Rail hosted an Xbox gaming event on Thursday, where passengers and passers-by competed to win Xbox prizes against members of the public at Glasgow Central station, with games being played live using the station’s WiFi connection.

They played the Forza motorsport game with live footage of each player streamed via webcam and a live leaderboard on display to show the scores between the two stations. It ended in a thrilling 10-10 draw, although Waterloo did have the two fastest times.

Cem Davis, Station Manager, Network Rail, said: “Our passengers have told us consistently through our surveys that free WiFi would be the key improvement they would like to see, and we’ve listened.

“We are committed to doing everything we can to make sure the station experience is as smooth and enjoyable as it can be for all our passengers, colleagues and station users, especially as we welcome more people back to the railway, and providing free WiFi is a key part of that.”
