New cycle parking facilities have recently been installed at Stevenage Station as part of a £36,000 investment by First Capital Connect in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council.

The new installation has increased the amount of cycle spaces available by approximately 55% and also provides new spaces for motorcycles and scooters.

The project was delivered as part of the Quality Rail Partnership, signed last November, between First Capital Connect and Hertfordshire County Council.

The agreement aims to strengthen the working relationship between the two organisations and generate more quality rail improvements at FCC stations throughout Hertfordshire.

New and improved cycle racks have already been installed at Hitchin, Welwyn North, Knebworth, and Harpenden stations, as part of a £200,000 investment in new cycle parking facilities. The programme commenced in autumn 2010, and is scheduled for completion by the end of May 2011.

Larry Heyman, FCC’s Integration and Partnership Manager, said:

“More and more people are choosing to cycle and we have continuously improved our cycle parking facilities to meet demand. Cycling is a sustainable, healthy and low cost way of travelling to and from the station. I would like to thank Hertfordshire County Council for their support in funding this major project.”

Councillor Stuart Pile, Hertfordshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said:

“With large volumes of traffic on the roads and pressure on parking facilities across the county, Hertfordshire County Council is keen to see improvements to cycle parking in order to encourage residents to use alternative travel options to get to the stations.

“We are grateful to First Capital Connect for managing the design and implementation of the new cycle parking facilities at so many of their stations across Hertfordshire and hope that it encourages more people to leave their cars at home and cycle.”
