A new secure cycle shelter has just been opened at Southend Victoria station to boost healthier travel options.

The shelter gives passengers and rail staff a safe and secure place to park their bikes, to encourage them to cycle to and from the station instead of going by car.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Head of Planning and Transport, Andrew Meddle formally handed over the shelter to senior officials from National Express East Anglia.

Mr Meddle said: “It is a key issue for cyclists to have somewhere safe and secure to park their bikes, so we are hoping this new shelter will further entice people out of their cars.

“Cycling to and from the station is an ideal way to get fitter, to save money on petrol, and to reduce the amount of carbon emissions.

“The shelter was funded through the Government-backed Cycle Southend project to increase cycling in the borough.”

Members of Cycle Southend and National Express East Anglia (NXEA) are due to join the launch celebrations, which also includes some cycling-related giveaways from Halfords.

Barry Laver National Express East Anglia’s station manager at Southend Victoria said:

“We are delighted to be working with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to improve cycle parking facilities at Southend Victoria station; these improvements will be warmly welcomed by our customers and will significantly enhance their experience of the station.

“By providing the option of the secure compound, cyclists now have more choice about where they park their bikes.”
