Elstree & Borehamwood railway station car park will close for a weekend in March as part of a project to extend platforms for longer Thameslink route trains.

Network Rail is delivering and installing new pre-fabricated platform sections on 19 and 20 March for which First Capital Connect will have to close the main station car park.

From 8pm on Friday 18 March, arriving traffic will be diverted to the reserved premier parking bays in front of the station which will be temporarily declassified. By 8am on Saturday 19 March, the main car park will be closed and vehicles will have to have been removed.

The main car park will reopen at 5am on Monday morning, 21 March.

Platforms are being extended at Elstree & Borehamwood station as part of the Thameslink Programme to reduce overcrowding on the route and create new cross-London journeys.

The first 12-carriage trains are expected to start calling at the station in December 2018. However, longer ‘fast’ trains will begin calling at stations between Bedford and St Albans from December this year, which is expected to reduce the number of people on board services for Elstree & Borehamwood.

FCC Customer Services Director Michelle Smart said: “We are sorry that the main station car park has to close for a weekend but by opening up our premier parking spaces to all, there will be more than enough space for our customers arriving by car.

“And ultimately, these platform extensions will mean longer trains in and out of London which I am sure will be welcomed.”

Jim Crawford, Network Rail major programme director for Thameslink, said: “The Thameslink route is a vital commuter route, transporting people to and from work every day. By increasing capacity we are ensuring that the infrastructure is in place to support the growth of the local economy.”
