East Coast passengers arriving into London from Monday (7 February) will benefit from new automatic ticket gates which have been installed at King’s Cross station.

The gates will improve security for passengers using the station and help prevent fraudulent travel and fare evasion on East Coast trains.

They are part of the major redevelopment work taking place at the station, which will see a brand new concourse in 2012.

The automatic ticket gates, which have been installed at platforms 0 to 5, will be familiar to many travellers on the East Coast route as they are already in operation at Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Newark North Gate and Grantham stations.

East Coast Property and Projects Director Tim Hedley-Jones said: “The new gates are an important part of ongoing improvements to stations and customer service.

“They will improve station and passenger security, and minimise fare evasion and the risk of crime, creating a more pleasant environment and a better travelling experience.”

The train operator is also carrying out a station investment programme including a £2.5 million redevelopment of Peterborough station, a £500,000 investment at York station to improve access and parking facilities for cyclists, and a £65,000 waiting room revamp at Retford station.
