Every RailStaff Awards finalist is a hero in their own right, but the recipients of the Lifesaver Award stand apart – they’re the ones who have literally brought someone back from the brink.
The Lifesaver Award recognises those staff who have used all their skills and training to help save a life on the rails and, this year, Carlisle Support Services’ Dorothy Omovbude was honoured for her split-second intervention.
Dorothy demonstrated extraordinary bravery and empathy during a potential suicide incident at Homerton Station. During the incident, she took immediate control of the situation, arranging for trains to be stopped and calling emergency services.
Staying with the distressed individual, she offered comfort and dignity, asking members of the public to shield the individual with their jackets. Dorothy’s calm, compassionate leadership prevented tragedy and showcased the utmost care, professionalism, and humanity.
“To have been honoured with this award is absolutely amazing,” said Dorothy. “It shows that our work is appreciated by our company, Carlisle, who nominated us, and also by the wider industry.”
“We don’t view what we do as just ‘work’. Every day is an achievement. Not only by saving lives, but by providing a service to the public, and making people feel comfortable and relaxed during their travel.”
Craig Smith, from category sponsor RailwayPeople.com, presented the award.
“The Lifesaver Award shines a light on the remarkable individuals who step forward when it matters most,” he said. “Dorothy’s courage, compassion, and decisive actions embody the very best of our industry. We’re proud to support an award that recognises such extraordinary humanity and professionalism.”
Highly commended:
