RSSB launches new Route Availability Calculator

Listen to this article

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has launched the Route Availability (RA) Calculator, a free online tool designed to streamline and simplify route planning for the entire GB rail industry.

For years, the rail industry has struggled with time-consuming and complex calculations to assess vehicle compatibility with bridges. The new calculator will accelerate and simplify the process of determining a vehicle’s RA number. This pivotal tool will allow for comparison with infrastructure route section RAs, to determine a vehicle’s suitability for that section.

The RA calculator is readily accessible through the RSSB website. Users simply need to input their axle distances and axle loads before the calculator determines the vehicle’s RA number. This number can then be compared with the RA numbers of route sections or bridges to determine a vehicle’s suitability for a specific route.

‘This new calculator is quick and easy to use and will become the single source of vehicle route availability calculations for the GB rail industry.’ – Neil Dinmore, professional head of plant at RSSB.
